Hanoi: make time for the everyday

Start with a walk, a coffee, and a manageable neighbourhood. A gentle introduction to the capital before you head further north.

Hanoi works well as the beginning of a northern Vietnam trip. Give yourself an unhurried arrival, then build a day around a walk, a meal, and one visit that interests you. This is a planning outline rather than a shortlist of inspected accommodation or venues.

Start small

Choose accommodation with your first few walks in mind. Compare the location on a map, recent guest comments about noise, and the practical route from your arrival point. A central address can still sit on a busy street, so check the room position as well as the postcode.

Give the city two different days

For your first full day, keep your plans close together. On the next, choose a museum, historic site, or food experience based on your interests. Check each venue’s own opening information before setting off. Leave one afternoon open rather than building the day around a string of reservations.

Continue into the countryside

Ninh Binh is a useful next planning stop. Check your actual departure and arrival locations before reserving a train or transfer: the transport hub and the place you sleep may require a separate local journey.
