Your first Vietnam trip: start with the route
A practical order for planning: entry checks, dates, a realistic route, and a simple arrival plan before you fill every day.

Start with the conditions that shape the trip: your entry requirements, the days available, and your arrival and departure cities. Then choose a route with enough time to enjoy each stop. You can add individual activities later.
Check entry requirements first
Use the Immigration Department’s e-visa portal and the relevant Vietnamese embassy or consulate for your nationality and circumstances. Check passport details, permitted entry points, and the dates that apply to your own journey before making commitments. The embassy’s official notice identifies this portal; its current availability and application requirements must be checked directly. We do not determine eligibility or process applications.
Count the days you actually have
An overnight international flight, a late arrival, and an early departure can turn ten calendar dates into fewer usable days. Write down your first and last nights. Mark any fixed reservations and reserve enough room for the journeys between bases.
Choose fewer bases
For a short visit, use a regional route. With more time, add a second region if the transfer makes sense. A suggested itinerary is an editorial starting point, not a guarantee that every connection will run on your dates.
Make an arrival plan
Save your accommodation address, a confirmed way to reach it, and an offline copy of the details you need. Ask your accommodation what happens if you arrive after normal check-in. Keep the first day light rather than booking something that depends on an on-time flight.
Check the gaps before you book
For each journey, record the departure point, arrival point, luggage rules, and cancellation conditions. Check current weather and any official travel notices for your route. Our transport planning guide provides a comparison framework.
